SUMMARY The aim of this study is to examine the interaction effects of each of two role variables (role conflict, and role ambiguity) and job design characteristics on employee job satisfaction across different technology organizations. The general hypothesis our study investigates is that role stress variables, job design characteristics, and organizational technology will interact such that individuals on simple, low- scope jobs in long-linked (manufacturing) technology and individuals on complex, high-scope jobs in mediating (service) technology will be less satisfied with their jobs under high rather than low levels of role stress. No significant differences in job satisfaction are predicted for individuals on complex jobs in long-linked technology or on simple jobs in mediating technology under different levels of role stress variables. Data were collected from two samples: (1) a manufacturing sample consisting of 149 managerial and staff personnel working in production and other related units of TA1 (Turkish Aerospace Industries), and FNSS (FMC-NUROL Defence Industries) firms; and (2) a service sample including 148 managerial and non-managerial personnel selected from Ankara University Medical Faculty İbn-i Sina Hospital, and Gülhane Military Medical Academy Biomedical Clinical Engineering Center. Role conflict and role ambiguity were measured by the instrument developed by Rizzo et al.(1970). The five core job dimensions included in the Job Diagnostic Survey developed by Hackman and Oldham (1975) were used to measure the degree of job scope or complexity. Technology was operationalized according to Thompson's ( 1 967) typology of long-linked, and 156SUMMARY The aim of this study is to examine the interaction effects of each of two role variables (role conflict, and role ambiguity) and job design characteristics on employee job satisfaction across different technology organizations.
