Özet
ÖZET Bu tez, yabancı dil eğitimi yapan sınıflarda edebi metinlerin son yıllarda ortaya çıkan yapıbozumcu ve göstergebilimi teorileri ışığında yeni bir yaklaşımla incelenmesini tartışmaktadır. Şimdiye dek uygulanan edebiyat öğretimi metotları, ya dış ya da iç faktörleri vurguladıkları için öğrencinin motivasyonu veya edebi yorumu konusunda pek çok problemler ortaya çıkmıştır. Oysa, yapıbozumcu ve göstergebilimsel edebi çalışmalar öğrencilerin aktif olarak derse katılımını gerektirmektedir. Bu tezde önerilen metot, öncelikle öğrencilerin edebi metinlerdeki dil unsurlarının anlamını kültürel çerçeve içerisinde kavramalarını beklemektedir. Bu da öğrenci açısından dil ve ' iletişim yetilerinin gelişmesini amaçlamaktadır. Edebi metinlerdeki değere ulaşan öğrenciler kendi değerleri ile sentez oluşturarak yeni bir metin yaratabilecektir. Üçüncü bölüm bu yaklaşımın detaylarını bazı eserlere atıflarda bulunarak tartışmaktadır. Bu bölümden hemen önce, ikinci bölüm edebiyatla ilgili bazı temel kavramları genel hatlarıyla sunmaktadır. Dördüncü bölüm D. H. Lawrence'm kısa hikayelerini ve iki romanını bu bilgiler ışığında tartışmaktadır. Beşinci bölüm ise bu hikayelerden birinin sınıf içerisinde nasıl işlenebileceği konusunda bir fikir vermektedir.

IV ABSTRACT This thesis aims to suggest a new approach for the study of literature in EFL classes in the light of recent theories of deconstruction and semiotics. Since the methodologies applied to teach literature so far have stressed either extrinsic or intrinsic factors, it has often been very difficult to motivate the students or to make them participate into the act of interpretation. Unlike such approaches, the deconstructive and semiotic readings of literature give a lot more importance to the role of the students as active meaning creators. The suggested approach in the thesis first expects the students to understand the linguistic items together with their cultural references. It implies the improvement in their linguistic and communicative competence. Then, the students are provided with the necessary tools of interpretation which let them discover multiple meanings in a literary text. After exploring the value of the text the students reconstruct their own text with a new center of values. As this approach requires an active participation on the part of the students, it is more suitable for the pedagogical aims of teaching. Chapter III provides the details of this approach with reference to some important studies. Before this chapter, Chapter II reviews the general concepts of literature. Chapter IV is designed to show how to study D. H. Lawrence's short stories and two novels in terms of deconstructive and semiotic reading principles. Chapter V demonstrates a sample lesson model to teach one of the short stories by D. H. Lawrence taking into account those principles.
