The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of depleting and expanding energy regulation strategies on job satisfaction, and to investigate the moderating effect of psychological capital on these relationships. An intensive diary study was conducted with a sample of 46 employees. Data were gathered using web-based questionnaires filled by the employees two working days in a row. According to conservation of resources theory it was hypothesized that depleting energy regulation strategies would predict lower job satisfaction and expanding energy regulation strategies would predict higher job satisfaction. Additionally, based on the broaden-and-build theory psychological capital was expected to have a positive relationship with job satisfaction. A moderation hypothesis was formulated expecting that psychological capital would lower the detrimental effect of depleting energy regulation strategies and intensify the enhancing effect of expanding energy regulation strategies on job satisfaction. The results of this study provide no support for the formulated hypotheses. This research highlights the possible influences of energy regulation strategies on job related outcomes and examines an individual state-like resource (i.e., psychological capital) as a possible influence.
