SUMMARY i The objective of this research is to fînd out the musical attitude of the senior class (the 6th, 7th and 8th classes) students of primary education and the relation between the those students' musical attitude and their sexes, classes and the type of school they attend. To reach the objective, the following questions are tried to be answered: 1.Do the musical attitudes of the senior class students differ in different types of schools they attend? 2.Do the attitude of the senior class students differ among male ör female students? 3.Do the attitudes of the students differ in the level of the classes they attend? The universe of the research consists of ali the students of the senior classes (the 6th, 7th and the 8th classes) of Mihriban Suat Bedük İlköğretim Okulu, in Kadıköy in İstanbul and Özel Ortadoğu İlköğretim Okulu in Kartal in İstanbul and Özel Cent İlköğretim Okulu in Sarıyer in İstanbul. The sample of the research consists of 360 students who have been randomly chosen from the senior classes of the schools in question. İÜin order to fınd the ansvvers to the questions, Musical Attitude Inventory is used as the source to get data. To test the musical attitudes of the senior class students, The Musical Attitude Inventory, which was developed and validity and reliability proved by Doctor Ayfer Kocabaş, an academic from Dokuz Eylül University, has been used. The data obtained by the help of the Inventory have been evaluated statistically according to problems. Frequency and percentage calculations have been done to analyse the problems and öne dimension variance analysis and“t”test have been used for the correlation analysis. Musical attitude of the students of the senior classes in primary schools have been evaluated in this research, considering the sex of the students, the type of school (private ör public) and the level of the classes. As the fîrst problem; an analysis has been carried out to fmd out if the musical attitudes of the students differ in different types of the schooîs. According to the results the students in state schools have a more positive musical attitude than the students in private schools. As the second problem an analysis has been carried out to fînd out if the students' musical attitudes differ for male ör female students. According to the results giriş have a more positive musical attitude than boys. ivAs the third problem; whether the musical attitude of the students differ in different levels of classes has been tried to be understood. According to the results the 6th year students have a more positive musical attitude than the 7th class students. And the 8th class students have slightly more positive musical attitude than the 7th class students do. Thus the results have changed the ideas at the beginning of the research such that the state schools had poor conditions and the students in such schools would have negative musical attitude. This research has shown that the students in state schools have more positive musical attitude than the students in private schools, that the students in the 6th classes have a more positive musical attitude than the other classes and that the 8th class students have a little more positive musical attitude than the 7th class students. it has also shovra that giriş have a more positive musical attitude than boys, as it was considered before this research. No research has been recorded as the literatüre scanned. The studies, carried out by Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı on different students9 attitude have been checked and some common arguments have been noticed indirectly, though. in Kağıtçıbaşı's studies, it has been found out that the student's attitude is determined in the family and is able to be altered in the primaıy education however slightly the alteration is. VThe following suggestions could be made to carry out a more positive musical attitude of the students. 1.As the results of the research observed, it is seen that the musical attitude of the students is far from being satisfactory, vvhich indicates that the objectives of music classes have not been reached. in order to have a more positive musical attitude, the hours are to be increased and the curriculum is to be enriched and made enjoyable. 2.The results of the research has shovra a negative indicator for private schools. So private schools are suggested that they should use ali their opportunities to create a more active music class. 3.The results also show that boy s a have negative musical attitude. To make it more positive, teachers should try to create a balanced attitude considering the sexual differences. 4.The shortage of the out of class musical activities has affected the attitude negatively. The students' musical attitude can be positively increased by emphasising the out of class musical activities. vi
