Özet

Öğretmenler şüphe götürmez bir şekilde eğitim sisteminin vazgeçilmez bir parçasıdır. Bir ülke, gelecek nesilleri iyi yetiştirmek için, iyi, yetkin ve anlayışlı öğretmenler yetiştirmeye ihtiyaç duyar. Öğretmen eğitiminin yanı sıra, bu tarz öğretmenlerin istihdamı da son derece önem taşımaktadır. Bu bağlamda, öğretmenlerin istihdamı için belirli kriterler ve prosedürler planlanmalı ve uygulanmalıdır. Diğer bir deyişle, öğretmen istihdam süreci; değerlendirme yöntemleri, hizmet öncesi öğretmen eğitimi ve benimsenen diğer prosedürleri kapsayacak şekilde bir bütün olarak titizlikle ele alınmalıdır. Bu nitel vaka çalışmasının amacı, İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının mevcut öğretmen alım süreci, değerlendirme yöntemleri, öğretmenlik bilgisi ve öğretmen alım süreci ile ilgili diğer prosedürler ve kavramlar hakkındaki bilgi ve tutumlarını incelemektir. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma, İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının öğretmen alım sürecine ve ilgili kavramlara ne derece aşina olduklarını ve bu sürece karşı genel tutumlarını vurgulamaktadır. Bu çalışmanın katılımcıları, Türkiye'nin batısındaki bir üniversitenin İngilizce öğretmenliği bölümünün 15 son sınıf öğrencisinden oluşmaktadır. Veriler, bir ay içerisinde her katılımcıyla yaklaşık 20 ila 30 dakika arasında süren yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yoluyla toplanmıştır. Her görüşme kaydedilmiş ve buna bağlı olarak araştırmacı önemli noktaları not almıştır. Elde edilen veriler daha sonra kodlar ve ilgili temaları/alt temaları içeren tematik analiz yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın sonucunda, katılımcıların yarısının mevcut öğretmen alım süreci hakkında yeterli bilgiye sahip olduğu, fakat mevcut öğretmen alım sürecinde kullanılan değerlendirme yöntemleri hakkında yeterli bilgiye sahip olanların sayısının yarıdan az olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Katılımcıların alan ve pedagojik alan bilgisi dahil olmak üzere öğretmenlik bilgisi hakkındaki genel farkındalıkları, kavramları ayırt edememeleri nedeniyle düşüktür. Öte yandan, katılımcıların mevcut öğretmen alım sürecine, Millî Eğitim Akademisi'ne, önceki öğretmen alım sürecinin bir parçası olan mülakata ve değerlendirme yöntemlerine yönelik genel tutumları olumsuzdur. Bunun sonucu olarak, katılımcılardan sadece dördü öğretmen alım sınavlarına başvurmayı düşünmektedir. Fakülte eğitimine gelince, katılımcıların çoğu olumlu bir tutum sergilemekte ve uygulama temelli dersleri tercih etmektedir. Buna ek olarak, katılımcıların yarıya yakını akademinin fakülte eğitimine entegre edilmesini ve önceki sistemin devamını önermektedir. Nihayetinde, bu çalışmanın bulguları ile ilgili olarak, öğretmen eğitimini ve değerlendirme yöntemlerini kapsayan öğretmen alım süreci hakkında öneriler, ilerideki çalışmalar ve paydaşlar için ortaya konmaktadır.

Teachers are undoubtedly an indispensable part of the education system. A country needs to train good, competent, and insightful teachers to raise future generations well. In addition to teacher education, the recruitment of such teachers is of utmost importance. In this regard, certain criteria and procedures for teacher recruitment must be planned and implemented. In other words, the teacher recruitment process must be rigorously addressed as a whole, encompassing assessment techniques, pre-service teachers' training, and other procedures adopted. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine the pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' knowledge of and attitude towards the current teacher recruitment process, as well as assessment techniques, teacher knowledge, and the other relevant procedures and concepts as to teacher recruitment itself. Therefore, this study emphasises the extent to which pre-service EFL teachers are familiar with the teacher recruitment process and relevant concepts, as well as their overall attitude towards it. The participants in this study consist of 15 senior students from the Department of English Language Teaching at a university in western Türkiye. The data were collected through semi–structured interviews with each participant, lasting approximately 20 to 30 minutes, over the course of a month. Each interview was recorded, and accordingly, the researcher took notes of key points. The data obtained was subsequently analysed by means of thematic analysis that includes codes and their relevant themes/sub – themes. As a result of this study, half of the participants have sufficient knowledge about the current teacher recruitment process, yet it was found that less than half of those who have sufficient knowledge about the assessment techniques employed in the current teacher recruitment process. The participants' overall awareness of teacher knowledge, including content and pedagogical content knowledge, is low due to their inability to distinguish the concepts. On the other hand, the participants' overall attitude towards the current teacher recruitment process, the National Education Academy, interviewing, which was part of the previous teacher recruitment process, and the assessment techniques is negative. As a result, only four of the participants think of applying for teacher recruitment exams. When it comes to faculty education, most participants have a positive attitude and prefer practice – oriented courses. In addition to this, nearly half of the participants recommend the integration of the academy into faculty education and the continuation of the previous system. Ultimately, concerning the findings of this study, recommendations about the teacher recruitment process encompassing the teacher training and the assessment techniques are presented for further studies and stakeholders.
